Yammer on Tour team are in London
The Yammer on tour team will be in London this week, to showcase their latest offerings following their acquisition last year by Microsoft. Positioned as the ‘enterprise social network platform’, it will offer insights into the product roadmap.
Of particular interest to us is where the platform will be developed integration wise with its other core offering, specifically in the office365 and SharePoint 2013 arena. The Yammer on tour sessions provide both product overview as it is today, but also insights as to where it is going.
The release of SharePoint 2013 with its new newsfeed and timeline features are in many ways an overlap of Yammer’s capabilities. For us we see Yammer as providing a richer ‘social networking’ capability, more advanced in many ways than those offered by SharePoint 2013, but constrained in relation to its lack of deep integration (at the time of writing) with other Microsoft services and cloud only platform.
We use it internally here at WorkShares but have put in place specific guidelines and policy’s on how it should and should not be used. We are recommending at present to continue to store documents/content inside of SharePoint, (all versions) and link back from Yammer for the immediate future. We’ll review this position once we’ve had a chance to see the update from Yammer this week.
